On October 4th and 5th, the SGC Lady Hornets wrapped up the 2016 golf season at Willowbrook Golf Club in Manchester, TN with a crowning achievement as the TSSAA Class A-AA state runner-up. This is the highest finish for any South Gibson County team in school history.
The Lady Hornets finished day one with the second lowest team score only trailing CAK. Sally Tiger started the tournament with a score of 81, followed by Rachel Tiger (89), and Bentley Davis (102) for a team score of 170.
Going in to the final day of the tournament, SGC had a one stroke lead over CPA for second place. All the Lady Hornets improved on their day one totals as Sally Tiger shot an impressive 79, Rachel Tiger shot 85, and Bentley Davis finished with a score of 90.
SGC finished day two with fireworks as Rachel Tiger rolled in a 30 foot putt on the par 5 16th hole for birdie. Just minutes later, Sally Tiger holed an unbelievable chip for birdie on the par 3 17th hole. Not to be outdone, Bentley Davis then chipped in on the par 4 18th hole to seal the Lady Hornetâs 2nd place finish.
As individuals, Junior Sally Tiger improved from her 10th place finish in 2015 to finish 7th overall. Bentley Davis improved from her 45th place finish in 2015 to finish tied for 35th. Rachel Tiger goes into her sophomore season with a tie for 21st in the 2016 season.
The accomplished year finishes with an outstanding record of 45-7, numerous individual awards, back-to-back district and region titles, and a state runner-up finish.
SGC placed as the best public school in the state championship field as well. With the entire team returning next year, SGC will look to bring home the schoolâs first state championship.
