In what may be the best game of the season, the Lady Hornet soccer team fell to Chester County 2-3 in double overtime.
Chester started quickly, being the aggressor in the first minutes of the game. After winning a corner kick, one of the midfielders headed a ball in to take a 1-0 lead. They continued to push, and after earning a foul, they were able to find the back of the net again to gain a 2-0 lead. The Hornets dug in deep and fought back. The Lady Hornets finally broke through as Gracie Flowers raced to a through ball, meeting the ball and keeper at the same time. The ball deflected out to freshman Ella Piercey, who took one touch to settle and then placed it in the back of the net from about 25 yards out. The score would remain 2-1 at half in favor of Chester County.
The second half was more of the same with each team gaining possession and putting shots on goal. The game was starting to look like it would end at 1-2, until SGC was awarded a corner kick. Sam Crews placed the ball perfectly in the six, and Hannah Hansbrough got her head to it knotting the game at 2-2. The score would remain through the end of regulation.
The first over time was more of the same, with each team creating some chances but neither team scoring. Heading into the second OT, it looked to be more of the same until Chester capitalized on a final attack. A wing player crossed the ball into the box, and a streaking midfielder headed the hall into the back of the net for the dagger. With 2 minutes left to play, SGC tried to mount a rally attack, but fell short.
It was a great game between two quality teams. The type of game that you hate to see a loser. The good news is that the season is not over for the Lady Hornets. We will travel to Memphis Kirby on Saturday for a sectional matchup with a chance to go back to the state tournament. The game will be at 5 pm.
