The Lady Hornet Soccer team knocked off Chester County 2-1 to win the first Region Championship in the program’s history. It was a back and forth battle for most of the first half with neither team able to gain an edge. Then, a ball played in by Brynlee Butler fell between the keeper and Tetteybea Addo. Addo pressured the ball, was able to drop to Madi Goodman right outside the box and she struck it well, tallying the first goal of the night. The two teams continued to battle until half time.
After half, more of the same happened. Each team created some chances but neither team was able to find the net. Then, Madi Goodman played a through ball to Hannah Hansbrough. Hansbrough took one touch back to the right, struck it from the corner of the 18, and found the back of the net giving SGC a 2-0 lead. Chester wasn’t going to go down without a fight however, as they drew a foul just inside the 18 and was granted a penalty kick. Chester was able to convert the PK to cut the lead to 2-1. Chester tried to create some more chances, but wasn’t able to beat keeper Sadie Nelson. Nelson played outstanding all night, gaining 12 saves and thwarting several good chances for Chester.
Both team will advance to the sectionals, and must win to advance to the state tournament. South Gibson will host Fayette Ware at 1pm Saturday and Chester County will travel to Covington.
