The Lady Hornets battled back from 2 different 1 goal differentials to knock off a talented JCS team 3-2. JCS started the game strong finding the only goal of the first half. The goal was a beauty, being struck from about 30 yards out. Both teams battled for the rest of the half, creating chances but never finding a goal.
SGC came out on fire in the second half. A ball was played long to Tetteybea Addo, who raced to the goal line to keep it in play. She then took a couple of dribbles in the box and crossed it to find Aly Goodman’s feet. Goodman did not miss, and she struck a beauty in to the back of the net. The battle continued as each team held possession and created chances. JCS then regained the lead with another tough shot from right around the 18, that found the side net. SGC continued to push, and earned a penalty kick after a corner ball hit a JCS defender’s hand. Aly Goodman stepped up and found the back of the net, re-tying the game at 2-2.
The battle raged on as both teams continued to find possession and create chances. Finally, Freshman Ella Piercey won the ball in the middle of the field, took one or two touches and hit a rocket to find the net and take the lead for good with about 12 minutes to go. JCS would not go down quietly, as they turned the pressure up and continued to get shots.
South Gibson keeper Sadie Nelson played a great game, thwarting a strong attack from JCS time and time again. She finished the game with 7 saves, as she and the Hornet defense held tough for the win.
SGC will travel to Murray, Kentucky on Saturday to take on Calloway County high school.
